This 2001 E46 330Ci was one of my very first cars and holds a special spot in my BMW journey. It came bone stock with pretty much zero options when I got it—no AUX, just a cassette player—but somehow still had Harman Kardon, the Sport Package, heated electric seats with memory, and a sunroof. For 2001, that was seriously ahead of its time.
The design of the E46 has aged incredibly well. I still think the rear end of this coupe might be my favorite of all the BMWs I’ve owned—clean, boxy, and just right.
Didn’t go too crazy on mods with this one, just some essentials to clean things up:
- Tinted Windows – simple but changed the whole vibe
- Angel Eye Retrofit – it didn’t come with any, so I added a clean setup
- OEM Xenon Replacements – upgraded both with OEM Osram 5K bulbs (had mismatched kelvins before… I’m picky about lights 😅)
- LCI Tail Lights (OEM) – brought the rear end to life
It wasn’t the quickest BMW I’ve owned—felt slower than the E92 even though this had the M54—but it had character. The transmission wasn’t the greatest, but for what it was, it delivered that raw, analog driving feel older BMWs are known for. No screens, no Apple CarPlay—just pure mechanical feedback and a heavy steering wheel.
Unfortunately, I crashed it while trying to drift during the first rain of the season (open diff life… both wheels locked mid-drift and I spun out hard). Luckily I was fine, and I ended up rebuilding it, giving it a fresh paint job, and eventually selling it a few months later.
It’s almost 25 years old now, and while I probably prefer the E92 overall, this E46 was a solid stepping stone—and a car that taught me a lot.
